A. Ramachandran Career Milestones

Participated in a group show with Dharmanarayan Dasgupta and Debi Prasad Saha at the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS), New Delhi. Virendra Kumar of Kumar Gallery saw this exhibition and offered Ramachandran a contract to work with him.

Came to New Delhi and joined Kumar Gallery as an artist.

1965

Joined Jamia Millia Islamia as a lecturer in art education. Later, along with artist Paramjit Singh and other colleagues, they developed this institution into a full-fledged department, offering Bachelor’s in Fine Arts (BFA) and Master’s in Fine Arts (MFA) programs in painting, sculpture, applied art, and art education.

Held first solo exhibition at Kumar Gallery, New Delhi. Participated in a group show with significant artists of that time in Kumar Gallery, New Delhi.

He also participated in numerous significant group exhibitions in India and other countries, showcasing his work to a broader audience. Participated in the Ten Indian Painters exhibition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the New Jersey State Museum, USA.

1967

Held his second and third solo exhibitions and received recognition as one of the most original Indian artists of his generation. Early shows were extensively reviewed by eminent art critics and writers, including Charles Fabri, Richard Bartholomew, Jaya Appasamy, O. V. Vijayan, Krishna Chaitanya, Keshav Malik, Santo Datta, Prayag Shukla, and Vinod Bhardwaj.

Participated in the Tokyo Biennale, Tokyo, Japan.

Visited Japan at the invitation of Tadashi Matsui, President of Fukuinkan Shoten, one of the country’s leading publishers of children’s picture books.

Copies of Kerala murals prepared as a research scholar in 1962 were exhibited at the Kyoto Municipal Museum, Kyoto, Japan.

Participated in the twenty-five years of Indian art exhibition at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi.

Fukuinkan Shoten published Hanuman, children’s picture book written and illustrated by Ramachandran. Tadashi Matsui translated the book into Japanese.

Designed a set of two stamps on the Indian Philatelic exhibition (INDIPEX) for the Department of Post and Telegraph, Government of India.

Illustrated This India book published by the Publication Division, Government of India, New Delhi. Written by Sheila Dhar, this book was produced to celebrate the 25th anniversary of India’s independence.

Participated in the Contemporary Indian Painting exhibition celebrating twenty-five years of India’s independence, Toronto, Canada, and Washington, DC and Los Angeles, USA.

Fukuinkan Shoten published Song of Circles, a children’s picture book written and illustrated by Ramachandran, in Japan. Famous poet Shuntaro Tanikawa translated this book.

Participated in the annual exhibition of the Society of Contemporary Art, Kolkata.

Held retrospective show showcasing thirteen years’ work in New Delhi organised by Kumar Gallery. Noted art critic Krishna Chaitanya wrote the introduction to the exhibition catalogue.
Hanuman, published by Adam and Charles Black, England.

Participated in the Triennale India Retrospike, Federal Republic of Germany.

Appointed as a commissioner for the fourth Indian Triennale, with Pranab Ranjan Ray and Nagji Patel. Departing from the convention of selecting many artists, he selected twenty-one younger artists, including folk artists Ganga Devi and Jivya Soma Mashe, to break the artificial division between rural and urban art expressions. Many of the selected artists, including Bikash Bhattacharjee, Bhupen Khakhar, Ganesh Pyne, Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, Gieve Patel, Jogen Chowdhury, Laxma Goud, Prabhakar Barwe, Paramjit Singh, Rameshwar Broota, and Vivan Sundaram, were later recognised as some of the most significant artists of India. However, this unorthodox selection caused much controversy and was rejected. Ramachandran resigned from the Akademi in protest.

Received the Noma Concours Award for Children’s Picture Book Illustrations, from the Asia-Pacific Cultural Center for UNESCO.

Inspired by the writings of Saadat Hasan Manto, a limited-edition portfolio of etchings was created, sponsored by Shaoor. The etchings were later exhibited at Prithvi Theater, Mumbai.

Jivya and the Tiger God, a children’s picture book published by Fukutake Shoten, Japan. Artist Devraj Dakoji assisted in preparing the illustrations for this book using the intaglio etching process.

At Mr. Ebrahim Alkazi’s initiative, a retrospective exhibition of eighteen years’ paintings, sculptures, drawings, miniatures, and graphics was held at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Bombay. Kumar Gallery and Art Heritage jointly sponsored this show.

Visited Dhaka, Bangladesh, with Shinji Tajima and Motoh Ito to conduct a workshop on children’s picture book illustrations as an expert with the International Mobile Team of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Participated in the India in Print show, Tropen Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

As part of a critical reassessment of Raja Ravi Varma’s role in Indian art, Ramachandran, along with conservator and art historian Rupika Chawla, mounted a landmark exhibition at the National Museum, New Delhi. The exhibition was organised jointly by the National Museum, Department of Culture, Government of India, Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala, Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, and the National Museum Institute. An edited volume, Raja Ravi Varma: New Perspectives, co-edited with Rupika Chawla, featuring contributions from leading artists and art scholars, was also released. This exhibition was pivotal in renewing attention and interest in Ravi Varma’s work in India and internationally after a period of neglect and discredit.

Appointed Visitor’s (President of India) Nominee for appointments at Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan.

Participated in the Wound exhibition, CIMA Gallery, Calcutta, Bombay, and New Delhi.

Ramachandrante Kala (Art of Ramachandran), written by P. Surendran in Malayalam was published by Kala Yatra. This book received the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi inaugural award for art criticism. The second edition of this book was released in 2024.

Fuku Akino Tenryn City Museum hosted an exhibition featuring original artworks from picture books by Fuku Akino (6 books) and Ramachandran (3 books).

Yayati mural painting and sculptural installation exhibited at Art Heritage, sixteen years after their first showing.
Elected Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi. The Akademi released a portfolio of prints of Ramachandran’s paintings.
An exhibition of watercolours was held, organised by the Fine Arts Resource at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai.
Wrote a weekly op-ed column on art and art education for six months in the Malayala Manorama, Kerala’s leading newspaper.

After nearly a decade of effort, the massive sculpture project at the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial, Sri Perumbudur, near Chennai, was completed. Ramachandran designed this large bas-relief sculpture, which measures 125 feet in length and nearly 20 feet in height. Subbaiah Sthapathy and his team of traditional sculptors, sthapatis, carved the sculpture.
Received Raja Ravi Varma Puraskaram from the Government of Kerala.

A major retrospective exhibition of drawings, sketches and studies covering fifty-six years of Ramachandran’s works held at Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi. Curated and designed by Ranesh Ray, the exhibition featured some two thousand drawings, sketches and studies. Accompanying the event, a two-volume book, A. Ramachandran: Life and Art in Lines, edited by R. Siva Kumar and including a special, extended biographical essay by Ramachandran himself, was released.
Ekalinji Fantasy: A. Ramachandran, Drawings, Sketches, Studies, 1958-2014, A Retrospective, written and designed by Ranesh Ray, was released.

The National Gallery of Modern Art, Bengaluru, hosted a comprehensive retrospective exhibition of Ramachandran’s paintings, sculptures, watercolours, drawings, and graphics spanning the years 1964 to 2016. R. Siva Kumar curated this show, which was organised in collaboration with Vadehra Art Gallery.

Earthen Pot: Image Poems, an exhibition featuring twenty-one coloured drawings, was held at Vadehra Art Gallery in New Delhi.

Ramachandran’s painting, Homage to the Setting Sun, was displayed in the Indian section, alongside classical Indian sculptures, at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, USA, for two years.

Changing Moods of the Lotus Pond and Insignificant Incarnations, a two-part exhibition of recent works, was held at Shridharani Art Gallery, Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi, organised by Vadehra Art Gallery.
Received the Kalidas Samman from the Government of Madhya Pradesh.

Kerala Lalithakala Akademi organised the Mahatma and the Lotus Pond, an exhibition of Ramachandran’s paintings, sculptures, watercolours and drawings at Durbar Hall, Kochi. Curated by R. Siva Kumar, this show was held in collaboration with Vadehra Art Gallery.
Curated by R. Siva Kumar, a selection of Ramachandran’s fifty years of art practice is exhibited at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai.

Rajasthan mein A. Ramachandran: Lalit Sharma key camerey sey (in Hindi), by Vinod Bhardwaj, published by Copper Coin. Artist Lalit Sharma accompanied Ramachandran on his many sketching excursions to the Bhil villages near Udaipur, capturing the experience through his lens. This book presents a curated selection of these photographs, offering a rare visual archive of Ramachandran’s artistic practice.
